Citronella essential oil has been registered as a plant-based insect repellant in the US since 1948 and it works similarly to DEET (masking the smell our bodies produce that attract insects) but without any negative side effects.
Lemongrass. This wonderful and bushy grass makes an excellent natural deterrent of mosquitoes.
Cedarwood is incredibly effective against ants, ticks and other insects.
Peppermint essential oil is one of the best natural bug repellents. It's not exactly clear why, but bugs — such as mosquitos — find this scent super offensive.
Geranium oil. Geraniol, the active ingredient in geranium oil, has been proven effective in repelling a wide variety of insects, including mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, ants, fleas, gnats, and ticks.
